The Secretariat of the African Decade for Persons with Disabilities (SADPD) is a technical agency established to implement the AU continental plan of action for persons with disabilities and the UN Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities in Africa.

Mental Health in need of technical assistance and advise.
the “Association for the Mentally Disabled Gambia (AMDG)” is the country`s only mental health group and was created as result of growing concern among stakeholders about the difficult conditions faced by the mentally ill in the country. The association, made up of the mentally ill, but also media representatives, mental health workers, teachers and education experts, associations of persons with disabilities, youth groups and volunteers, has an official mandate to raise awareness on the stigma and discrimination associated with psychosocial disability and advocate for the rights of the mentally ill at government and community level. The association can also play an important role in advocating for the Gambia’s ratification of the CRPD, change the “lunatic act” and develop an inclusive national mental health strategic plan and adapt the national mental health policy. While in its infancy, the organization has consultations with the government, train media practitioners, bi-weekly radio or television shows, community outreach programs and is lobbying for the basic human rights of the mentally ill to be respected. Mental health is not seen to be given its due priority, Once being diagnose the class room is beyond your reach, the family abandons you, no social protection net for the mentally ill etc. The association in its infancy requires support and strengthening to ensure that it is able to play a determining role in national decision-making processes.
